Kyoto City: Listening for What Comes Next

Kyoto City: Listening for What Comes Next
There is something about Kyoto that I cannot quite put into words.
Between what has been passed down through centuries and what is only beginning to emerge, something invites us to pause and listen.
Many people may associate me with Osaka, but I am also involved in Kyoto City’s cultural policy, contributing to policy subcommittee discussions on its third plan for arts and culture.
Kyoto is still a city with much for me to discover. Looking from a little outside, and sometimes stepping back to see the wider picture, I have been considering both its strengths and its challenges. I want to keep asking questions, rather than assume I already understand.
The draft plan speaks of carrying a thousand years forward, and creating a thousand years to come.
Beyond those words, I sense an open space, like music we have yet to hear. Who will encounter the arts? Who will sustain them? What new forms of expression might emerge? The next passage will be shaped by the voices of those who share a connection with this city.
As I continue my musical work from Osaka and Tokyo, I hope to keep drawing inspiration from Kyoto, the city between them.
I invite you to lend your voice to Kyoto City’s next chapter.
Public comments on the draft plan are welcome until November 29, 2026.
