Yuya Miyazaki | Conductor
Born in Tokyo in 1988, Yuya Miyazaki moved to the United States after graduating from high school, where he studied conducting, musicology, and neuropsychology. He earned a Master of Music degree in Orchestral Conducting from the University of North Texas and subsequently completed his doctoral coursework in conducting. His conducting mentors include David Itkin, Dian Tchobanov, Gregory Buchalter, Tomáš Netopil, and Chiyuki Murakata. He also studied operatic dramaturgy with Stephen Dubberly and musicology with Peter Mondelli.
While pursuing his studies, Miyazaki gained professional experience with orchestras and opera companies across the United States, serving as an assistant conductor and conducting educational concerts. In 2016, he was invited to the Varna International Opera Festival in Bulgaria as an assistant conductor and returned the following year as a conductor, making his European debut with a production of Aaron Copland’s The Tender Land. He continued to develop his operatic expertise through international festivals and academies in Europe and the United States, including the Accademia Europea dell’Opera in Italy.
From 2016 to 2019, Miyazaki served as conductor of the Dallas Asian American Youth Orchestra, leading the ensemble on its first European concert tour, with performances in Vienna and Salzburg. He also served as Orchestra Director at the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science, contributing to the musical education and development of young musicians.
Following approximately eleven years in the United States, Miyazaki returned to Japan, where he served as Artistic Director and General Manager of Sakai City Opera. He has also conducted performances under the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ school touring program. As a freelance conductor, he maintains an active career across opera, orchestral music, wind ensembles, and choral repertoire, with a particular focus on opera. Recent engagements include conducting an opera gala featuring Kansai Opera and Kansai Nikikai as part of the Osaka Classic music festival. His operatic repertoire encompasses more than twenty productions, including La bohème, Tosca, Rusalka, and Die Fledermaus.
In 2022, Miyazaki joined a new interdisciplinary production led by conductor Kent Nagano and Noh performer Akihiro Yamamoto of the Kanze school. Serving on the musical staff, he assisted in performances combining a newly created Noh work with Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot lunaire, further expanding his experience in artistic collaborations between Western classical music and traditional Japanese performing arts.
In 2026, Miyazaki was appointed Project Leader of the Next Generation Initiative at the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra. He also serves as a part-time lecturer at the Faculty of International Studies, Ryukoku University, and at Kwansei Gakuin University. Alongside his conducting career, he is committed to nurturing the next generation of musicians, audiences, and arts management professionals, contributing to the continued development and future of musical culture.
