大東市、近くてまだ知らない音。 / Daito: Close to Home, a Sound Yet to Discover

先日は、大阪府の文化の専門人材として、大東市へ。来年のコンサートに向けた打ち合わせでした。

今住んでいる天王寺区から、意外なほど近い。それなのに、これまで訪れるきっかけがなく、私にとってはまだ知らないまちでした。距離の近さと、その場所を知っていることは、案外別のことなんですよね。

そんな大東市には、サーティホールという素敵なホールがあります。図書館やギャラリーも集まる文化の拠点。音楽が、まちの日常と出会う場所です。

今回の構想も、少しずつ輪郭が見えてきました。クラシックに、ポップス。新しい作品、そして人気グループを巣立った方との出会いも。詳しいことは、またお知らせできるときに。

なかなか盛りだくさんの予感。

楽しみと、ほんの少しの冷や汗。

こういうときに顔を出すのが、アメリカ時代の無茶振りと、オペラの現場で鍛えられた対応力です。異なる表現や予想外の出来事を受け止めながら、ひとつの流れをつくっていく。

まだ知らなかったまちに、これから生まれる音楽がある。当日には、ここがどんな響きを持つ場所になっているのか。今から少し、楽しみです。

Daito: Close to Home, a Sound Yet to Discover

Recently, I visited Daito in my role as a cultural specialist for Osaka Prefecture, for a meeting about next year's concert.

It is surprisingly close to Tennoji, where I now live. Yet I had never had a reason to visit. Being near a place and knowing it are, perhaps, two rather different things.

Daito has a lovely venue called Thirty Hall, part of a cultural centre that also brings together a library and a gallery. A place where music can meet the everyday life of a city.

Our plans are slowly taking shape: classical music, pop, a new work, and an encounter with an artist who has moved on from a popular group. More on the details when the time comes.

It promises to be quite a mix.

Excitement, with just a hint of nerves.

This is where the unexpected demands of my years in America, and the adaptability learned in opera, come into their own: bringing different forms of expression together, making room for the unforeseen, and finding a thread through it all.

In a city I had yet to discover, there is music waiting to be made. I wonder what this place will sound like on that day. I am looking forward to finding out.

…Though invitations to conduct a straightforward orchestral programme are also very welcome. 🙏
